Did you hear about the philosophy professor who, for the course’s final exam, asked only one question: Why?  The students were given an hour and a half to complete their essays and hand in the papers. It only took one enterprising pupil only a few minutes before writing a brief answer and placing his completed examination on the professor’s desk. When the teacher read that students paper, it surprised him to see only two words: Why not? That student got an A on his final. Our topic today has a very different answer and is far more profound in its meaning.

The text in question is:

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.  John 1:1-3 (ESV)

Referring to John 1:1 Crosswalk.com says:

“In this one sentence, John is proclaiming Jesus as ‘the Word’, which would have suggested that he is the beginning and culmination of all that has been true throughout eternity, and that to seek the truth ultimately leads us to seek him.”

The word “word” in this verse is the Greek word logos from which we get our word logic and the ending -ology means the study of something. One of the meanings of this word is ‘reason’. A simple concept but fraught with eternal implications. The answer not only to life, but all of eternity is in one name: Jesus the Christ. I believe the evidence of this is found in the verses:

9  Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10  so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11  and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.  Philippians 2:9-11 (ESV)

8  which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9  making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ
10  as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. Ephesians 1:8-10 (ESV)

36  For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. Romans 11:36 (ESV)
